The Words of Jesus – Part 1

1. Jesus’ First Words 2nd January 2022

Text: Matthew 3:13-17

Most Bibles today have Jesus’ words in red, and in this series we’re going to look at the Words of Jesus. This Sunday we’re going to start with Jesus’ First Words as an adult, words he spoke to John the Baptist. Jesus’ first words are a little cryptic, so we’re going to unpack what he means. But Jesus’ first words also set the tone for his whole ministry, and they set the tone for our lives. This Sunday my prayer is that Jesus would speak to you, and that his words would challenge your thinking and change your life.

2. Jesus Speaks God’s Words 9th January 2022

Text: Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus’ words have changed people’s lives, in fact they have changed the world. But often the words Jesus spoke came straight out of the Old Testament. This Sunday we’re looking at how Jesus spoke God’s words. Jesus faced Satan and temptation using the same resources we have, God’s word. This Sunday join us as we look at how the Bible is the sword of the Spirit, and how we can use it to defeat Satan’s lies.

3. Jesus Speaks Good News 16th January 2022

Text: Mark 1:14-15

Jesus spoke all sorts of amazing things throughout his ministry, but one of the most significant things Jesus ever said that defined everything else he said, was the gospel. This Sunday we’re going to look at how Jesus proclaimed the good news. We’re going to see what the good news is, why Jesus proclaimed it, and how you are called to respond to it. If you need to hear some good news, then this sermon is for you.

4. Jesus’ First Sermon 23rd January 2022

Text: Luke 4:16-30

I remember being very nervous the first time I ever preached a sermon. This Sunday we’re going to listen to Jesus’ first sermon. Luke uses this sermon to set up both Jesus’ mission and people’s opposition to him and his mission. We’re going to learn some important lessons from Jesus’s life, but specifically we’re going to look at what his mission was, how people rejected Jesus, and the consequences of doing so. We’re going to learn some surprising things about Jesus’ mission.

5. Jesus’ Words to Seekers 30th January 2022

Text: John 1:35-51

What does Jesus have to say to spiritual seekers? If you want to know who Jesus is or what it means to be a Christian then this Sunday is for you. We’re going to see what Jesus says to four different people. We’re going to hear Jesus’ question ‘What are you seeking?’ and his invitation to ‘Come and See.’ And we’re going to be challenged to follow him, with the promise that if we do so, we will see great things. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, Jesus has something to say to you.

6. Jesus’ Words to Nicodemus 6th February 2022

Text: John 3:1-21

Jesus’ dialogue with Nicodemus contains some of the most well-known verses in the Bible, but often we take them out of context, and we have no idea of the other things Jesus says to Nicodemus. This Sunday we’re going to focus on everything that Jesus has to say to both Nicodemus and to us. We’re going to look at four things: what it means to be born again, the heavenly things that Jesus wants us to know, how we experience God’s love, and the reality of our human nature. What Jesus has to say will change everything.

7. Jesus’ Words to the Samaritan Woman 13th February 2022

Text: John 4:1-29

Sometimes we wonder if we can approach Jesus at all. We wonder how he could ever love someone like us. But the story of the Samaritan Woman shows just how far Jesus will go to rescue sinful people like you and me. Even though Jesus knows just how sinful she is, he offers her the greatest gift that God has to give, not only himself, but the life-giving presence of the Holy Spirit. This Sunday come and hear Jesus’ words to you, and his offer of living water, and his invitation to worship God in spirit and truth.

8. Jesus’ Words about God 20th February 2022

Text: John 5:15-47

The only way to really know someone is to talk to someone who knows them, or talk to the person themselves, or have a relationship with them. We get to know God the same way. The Bible is God telling us about himself, and as we live and relate to God we grow in our knowledge of him. But in this sermon we’re going to look at what Jesus says about God. We’re going to see how Jesus had a unique relationship with God, one that he invites us to share. But Jesus also tells us that God is at work in our world, and that God is a Living God. If God is who Jesus says he is, it will change everything about how you live and relate to God.

9. Jesus’ Words about Himself Part 1 27th February 2022

When we introduce ourselves we often start with ‘I am…’ For example, ‘I am Pastor Josh,’ Or, ‘I am Alice’s husband.’ So, how does Jesus introduce himself? This Sunday we’re going to look at how Jesus saw himself. In John’s Gospel Jesus uses that phrase ‘I am’ eight times. If you’ve ever wondered who exactly Jesus is, then this Sunday Jesus is going to introduce himself to you. This Sunday Jesus is inviting you to meet him.

10. Jesus’ Words about Himself Part 2 6th March 2022

How often have you said, ‘God bless,’ or had someone say it to you? It sounds like a lovely sentiment, but what exactly do we mean when we say those two words, what exactly are we asking God to do? This Sunday we’re going to look at Jesus’ words of blessing, which are known as the beatitudes, or the blessed attitudes. We’re going to see that we don’t receive God’s blessing because we’re like this, but that those who have been blessed by God live differently. This Sunday we’re going to look at how you can receive God’s blessing, live a blessed life, and how you can bless others.

11. Jesus’ Words of Blessing 13th March 2022

Matthew 5:1-11

When we tell people about ourselves we often tell them something that gives us significance, that’s important. In the same way when Jesus tells us about himself he wants us to know something significant about who he is and what he came to do. Jesus isn’t being cryptic with these ‘I Am’ statements, rather he wants us to understand that who he is will change our eternal destiny. Jesus is more than just a good leader, he wants to shepherd our souls. He’s not just a good teacher, he came to give us eternal life. He’s not just introducing another religion; he’s actually the only way to God. He’s not giving us good advice, rather apart from him we can’t do anything. There’s no one you need to meet more than Jesus!

12. Jesus’ Words about Righteousness 20th March 2022

Matthew 5:17-20

What if people really knew what we really think, or the sins we struggle with, or what we do behind closed doors? What if someone found out? Most of us want people to think we’re a good person and we try to put on that front. But according to Jesus that’s what the Pharisees did. Their righteousness was all about external appearances. This Sunday we’re going to be looking at how our righteousness will never be enough, and how we need the righteousness of Jesus to be right with God. But we will also look at how Jesus calls us to a righteousness that exceeds that of the Pharisees.
